As the Western Cordillera consists of a combination of higher and lower elevation, there is a great variety of vegetation. For example, herbs, lichens and shrubs are found at higher elevationsand various coniferous forests and grasslands are located at lower elevations. However, due to the lack of precipitation, evergreens do not grow. Most of the soil is rich and fertile due to the sand and salt deposits by the rivers
